Tefillah Notes-Pesukei d’Zimrah-Shabbat HaGadol-96 Print E-mail
Written by Machberes Avodas Hashem

Shabbat-Hagadol-Achieving GreatnessOn Shabbat morning I focused on Vayivarech David at the end of Pesukei D'Zimrah. He represented everything to the Jewish people. Can you imagine his impact on the people? If they understood the goodbye speech that we are reading he must have lifted them to an unbelievable level.

Yet, with all his greatness, he would have to die in order for the Beit Hamikdash to be built. Can you imagine the mixed feelings of the people? They are filled with expectations and sadness.

The paragraph of Nechamia, composed before building the second Beit Hamikdash continues that theme. They too were filled with expectatiion mixed with sadness that this new temple would not equal, could not equal the first. Why are expectations developed at this point of tefillah? How does the shirat hayam follow?

Shirat Hayam is expectations! Hashem Yimloch, God will be king, future, (for which they are criticised) The women had musical instruments because

they said in Egypt if so many miracles have occurred, surely more will, let us be prepared to sing Hashem's praises!

The Zohar on Vavakhel says that the point of the conclusion of Psukei Dzimra is expectation that your Shema and Shmine Esrei will be great.

Back to Nechemiah's paragraph after Vayivorech David: We read the two prayers as if they were one paragraph. The message; continuity
