Countdown to Chanukah 15 Print E-mail

ChanukahIt is a Mitzvah to place the Chanukah candles on the outside of the entrance to one’s home. (Shabbat 21b) This reenacts the Menorah in the Beit Hamikdash, which illuminated the world outside the Temple’s walls, and found its way into the hearts of all of Israel. The windows of the Beit Hamikdash were wide on the outside and narrow on the inside to show that the windows did not exist for light to enter the Beit Hamikdash, but to shine out of the Sanctuary and illuminate the world.

We do not light the candles to illuminate our homes, but to share the light we have gained with the world.

ToolsApplication:
(We plan a Music of Halacha to explain why we no longer light our candles outside. It has something to do with French fries!)

We should make a special effort on Chanukah to share the Torah and insights we have been granted with others.
